Burkina Faso has officially completed the nationalisation of Air Burkina, marking a major milestone in the country’s aviation and transport policy.

The government now holds 100 percent ownership of the national airline, signalling a decisive shift in its strategy to strengthen regional air connectivity and protect national transport assets.

The move was formalised through an official government decree, transferring complete control of Air Burkina to the Burkinabè state.

With all private shareholding eliminated, the airline is now fully under public ownership, giving authorities the mandate to stabilise operations and restore the carrier’s long-term economic viability.

According to the Council’s final communiqué, the executive adopted a decree authorising the increase of the State’s participation in Air Burkina SA, previously a mixed-ownership company.

This decree legally enshrines the full nationalisation of the airline, which has been undergoing a restructuring process in recent months.

Officials highlighted that Air Burkina faced significant financial and operational challenges over the past several years, affecting its fleet, routes, and overall service capacity.

The company has been going through significant financial and operational difficulties, affecting its operating capacity and assets,” the government explained in an official statement.

By becoming the sole shareholder, the state intends to stabilise the airline’s finances, ensure operational continuity, and restore its economic viability over the long term.

This step positions Air Burkina as a strategic transport asset, enhancing Burkina Faso’s ability to control regional air transport and maintain consistent service for both domestic and West African routes.

Dividends and Historical Context

The nationalisation process traces back to a transaction on September 24, 2024, when the government purchased 111 shares — representing 1% of the airline’s share capital — from a private shareholder for a symbolic sum of one CFA franc.

This initial move paved the way for complete state ownership and the consolidation of Air Burkina as a fully state-owned carrier.

Analysts note that state ownership provides the airline with the flexibility to secure airline partnerships, modernise its fleet, and attract investment, all while maintaining sovereignty over a crucial transportation asset.
