Africa’s tourism sector is projected to generate over $23 billion in revenue by 2024, marking a 7.49% growth from the previous year, according to Claver Gatete, Executive Secretary of the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA).
Despite a 67% decline during the COVID-19 pandemic, Africa has recovered 92% of pre-crisis tourist levels by 2023, significantly boosting GDP and employment.Â
Speaking at the IGAD Sustainable Tourism Master Plan launch, Gatete emphasized that tourism is crucial for Africa’s economic recovery amid debt distress and climate challenges.Â
To sustain growth, the continent needs improved transport systems, connectivity, and infrastructure. UNECA’s Tourism Satellite Account will help countries measure tourism’s contributions, enhancing data-driven growth.Â
