Portugal has ramped up enforcement of visa regulations, with Public Security Police issuing fines to tourists who overstay their 90-day limit within 180 days.
This move comes as the country experiences a 15% rise in non-resident tourists in 2024, according to Caixa Bank, and aims to maintain order amid the tourism surge.
Fines for overstaying range from €40 to €250, depending on the duration of the violation, though the maximum fine of €700 has not yet been issued.

In 2023, over 1,200 fines were issued for visa violations, including overstaying and failure to declare entry.
Despite stricter enforcement, Portugal remains a top destination, with a 7.5% increase in foreign tourists in 2024, contributing €43.7 billion to the economy and driving significant growth.
