Following recent pay increases approved by the new Labour government, public-sector employers in the UK now anticipate higher wage growth than the private sector for the first time since 2020.
A survey by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) found public-sector pay expectations rose to a 4% median increase, compared to 3% in the private sector, with short-term projections reaching 5%.

The boost stems from new wage agreements of 4.75%-6% for millions of public-sector workers, partly funded by increased employer taxes and a 6.7% minimum wage hike.
While public-sector pay gains provide relief after pandemic stagnation, rising employer costs may challenge private firms’ hiring and wage plans.
