The UK government has clarified its visa processing figures for Nigerian travelers, addressing concerns following reports of a significant number of visa approvals.
Contrary to claims that it had approved around 430,000 Nigerian visa applications this year, the UK government confirmed that while approximately 430,000 applications were processed in 2024, the actual number of approved visas was lower.
After a meeting between UK official Dr. Montgomery and Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), it was revealed that from April 2023 to March 2024, the UK issued 255,000 visas to Nigerians.
This correction is important for Nigerians planning to travel to the UK, as it reflects a more selective approach to visa approvals. Additionally, recent UK Home Office data shows a 38% decline in study visas issued to Nigerians from March 2023 to March 2024.
This drop follows a January 2024 policy change that limits dependents for international students, except in research-focused postgraduate programs. Consequently, the number of visas issued to Nigerians fell from 50,000 to 45,000, amid a broader 6% decline in main applicant visas.
The meeting also addressed concerns over the safety of the Nigerian diaspora following recent violent protests in the UK.
Dabiri-Erewa reassured the community that no Nigerians have been reported dead or affected by the unrest and urged them to remain vigilant.
