Nigerian-American Kelechi Ndukwe has made history as the first Nigerian to command a US Navy warship.
Recently promoted to Navy Captain, Ndukwe now commands the USS Halsey (DDG-97), an Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer.
His naval career spans over 20 years, beginning in 2003 after earning a master’s degree in National Security and Strategy Studies from the US Naval War College.

Ndukwe’s distinguished service includes leading the USS Devastator (MCM 6) and serving on multiple warships globally. His promotion has been celebrated by prominent figures, including Segun Victor Agunbiade and Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman of NiDCOM, who hailed his achievement as a significant milestone for Nigerian-Americans in the military.
