Asylum seekers in Hull have expressed concerns about their safety after being informed they are being sent to Rwanda as part of the government’s plans.
A Hull charity reported that 16 asylum seekers were detained and sent to a detention centre without notice or formal warning. The Home Office has begun detaining “illegal migrants” in preparation for the first flight to Rwanda in nine to 11 weeks.
Gainsborough MP Sir Edward Leigh said the move would keep migrants safe. A Hull charity, Welcome House, reported that 16 young men, including footballers, were rounded up and their phones taken from them.
Official documents revealed that contact has been lost with 3,557 of the 5,700 asylum seekers in the first group identified for removal to Rwanda.

Sir Edward said asylum seekers should have no fears of being unsafe in Rwanda and that the country has a close working relationship with Rwanda.
