Ethiopian Airlines and Emirates Airways were involved in a near-collision incident over Somalia airspace on March 24, 2024.
The Somaliland Civil Aviation and Airports Authority reported that the Ethiopian Airlines flight ETH690 and Emirates Airways flight UAE722 were flying at 37,000 feet.
The Somaliland Air Traffic Controller’s intervention helped avoid the collision, as the pilot changed his altitude and climbed to 39000ft.
The Somaliland Civil Aviation and Airports Authority blamed traffic controllers in Mogadishu, Somalia, for making “mistakes” and threatening the safety of international flights.
Tensions between Somaliland and Ethiopia have developed since the signing of a memorandum of understanding in January 2024, which included Ethiopia’s 20 kilometers of coastal land for maritime and military purposes.
