Estonian ride-hailing company Bolt has announced a new in-office mandate, requiring its 4,000 employees to work from the office 12 days per month, following CEO Markus Villig’s concerns over a “disconnected” workforce.
Villig, who criticized employees’ choices to work remotely from destinations like Bali, argued that remote work practices have led to high attrition, low office occupancy, and poor team cohesion.
“We will stop the insanity of people working remotely from places like Bali. That is a vacation,” he reportedly told staff in an internal email.
Starting January 1, the policy will be formalized to encourage in-person collaboration while maintaining some flexibility for staff within travel distance of a Bolt office.

Bolt’s stance aligns with other companies like Amazon that are increasing in-office requirements, as some CEOs view in-person work as key to driving innovation and performance.
