A Belgian medical student, aged 20, died after falling off the Cliffs of Moher while visiting a scenic tourist spot in County Clare with three friends.
The tragic incident occurred when the woman lost her footing while walking along the cliffs and fell to her death. The group was of different nationalities and not based in Ireland.
A major search and rescue operation was mounted by watch officers at the Irish Coast Guard’s marine rescue coordination centre on Valentia Island in Kerry. The Shannon-based search and rescue helicopter was also tasked.
The Aran Islands RNLI all-weather lifeboat was tasked to assist with the operation, while Clare County Fire and Rescue Service units from Ennistymon station were dispatched to the scene. Clare Civil Defence’s drone team was requested to respond, but were later stood down.
A search of the area was carried out, and a body was quickly located. The body is expected to be transported by hearse to University Hospital Limerick for a post-mortem examination.
