What Makes an African Country Safe to Relocate To?
Moving to another country means starting a new life. And depending on where, your new life can easily become a nightmare if you don’t choose right. Some people have a pleasant experience moving to Africa, while some others regret. If you don’t want to r regret moving to Africa, you must look out for certain expected factors such as safety, security, infrastructure, and economic stability.
For example, a Nigerian IT professional and entrepreneur, Femi Alla responded that there are certain challenges in moving to Africa. He emphasised that relocating to Africa should depend on one’s motivation, including infrastructure, a less structured or developed environment, or a desire for a peaceful or adventurous setting. Thus, some key factors come into play when considering safe places to live in Africa, which are highlighted below.
- The political situation of the country.
- The crime rate, when considering whether it’s a safe place for you.
- The quality of healthcare in your chosen destination. Will it suit your needs?
- Determining if the infrastructure aligns with people’s work and lifestyle. Will it make you more productive or less?

The 7 Safest African Countries to Relocate to (2026 Rankings)
I am giving this list based on experience and a report published by the Institute of Economics & Peace (IEP). The Global Peace Index is the world’s leading tool for measuring peacefulness globally.
No more ado. Let us get right into it: the top 7 safest African countries you can relocate to in 2026.
1. Mauritius – Safest African Countries
My time in Mauritius was marvellous. Mauritius is a small country. You can drive around the entire island in about 3 hours. But everywhere is so beautiful. The air is clean, the roads are perfectly planned, and people even leave their doors unlocked. As a Lagos boy, that was my first cultural shock.
If you are like me, you may get bored easily here because everywhere is too calm. But you would have a great time in Grand Baie in the north. It has this easy, open energy where you will meet many different people, locals, expats, and tourists. There’s a growing East and West African community there, so you won’t stick out so much. Anyway, people here mind their business in the best way.
Now, I got overexcited and forgot to cite the GPI. According to the IEP, Mauritius is known for its peaceful, stable, and economically progressive environment. Why should you move to Mauritius?
- Mauritius is the safest country in Sub-Saharan Africa for the 17th consecutive year. It is the only Sub-Saharan African country not involved in external or internal conflicts in the past five years.
- Mauritius is the top safest African country in the sub-Sahara, with a global rank of 22 on the international peace index, an overall score of 1.577, and the 1st safest in the regional rank.
- Mauritius has a stable democracy.
- It is an upper-middle-income country with a per capita income of over $10,000.
- Mauritius is known for its island lifestyle, contributing to its tourism growth.

2. Botswana – Safest African Countries
This one is close to my heart because it’s so underrated. Everyone talks about South Africa next door and completely sleeps on Botswana. Their loss, honestly.
Botswana is a landlocked, flat, and dry country. You will not find dramatic coastlines. But since you are moving in, you will enjoy space, quiet, and a dignity in daily life that’s hard to explain until you’ve felt it. The government actually works here. Like, you go to a government office and the people there are actually polite and things get processed. I know, right? It is wild and almost unbelievable for me too.
If you are thinking of moving with family, I recommend Gaborone (specifically the Game City and Broadhurst area). That is the capital city. That is where you will also find the most business. It’s not a glamorous city, but I can tell you for free that it’s functional, clean, and safe. The Broadhurst neighbourhood is where I stayed with some brothers. You will find people here, including Nigerians, Zimbabweans, Kenyans, and Congolese friends.
Botswana is a growing economy and has a transparent political system. Also, it is one of the most peaceful countries in Africa, ranking 50th globally with an overall score of 1.863.
Below is key information to consider if you want to relocate to Botswana.
- Botswana is a friendly and hospitable country.
- It is recognised as one of the strongest democracies in Africa.
- Botswana is the second-largest producer of diamonds in the world, with a production rate of 25.1 million carats, which is the primary driver of its economic growth.
- Diamond production contributes about 17% of its GDP and 80% of its exports.

3. Sierra Leone – Safest African Countries
If you’re moving to West Africa, Sierra Leone is one of the countries to consider.
I wish I could unlist Sierra Leone from this safest African countries blog because very few people move there. And honestly what keeps it special is that it hasn’t been overrun yet.
The perfect place to stay would be Freetown, specifically the Aberdeen and Lumley area.
Freetown is a hilly, chaotic, warm city that sits right on the Atlantic coast. The hills literally tumble into the ocean. There’s nowhere quite like it visually on the continent.
You will find many brothers in Aberdeen and Lumley on the Aberdeen Peninsula. West Africans especially Nigerians, Ghanaians, and even Gambians, have settled there comfortably. You’ll hear familiar accents, find familiar food, and navigate the social scene without feeling like an outsider.
Sierra Leoneans are actually warm with other Africans. The city is still developing. The infrastructure is not that impressive, but this list is not about tourist sights. You will feel good here because the cost of living is low enough that your money goes far, and the quality of daily human interaction makes up for a lot. People will invite you to things and actually check on you. It has that village-in-a-city energy that Accra used to have before Accra became Accra.
The question most people ask is: Is Sierra Leone safe? Yes.
Below are reasons you should consider moving to Sierra Leone.
- Sierra Leone ranks 66 on the Global Peace Index, with an overall score of 1.993.
- It has significantly reduced violent conflict, becoming one of the fastest peace recovery countries.
- The locals in Sierra Leone are known to be friendly.
- Infrastructure is gradually improving following damage caused by the civil war between 1991 and 2002.
A user, Krutarth Rindani, who lives in Freetown, Sierra Leone, confirmed that Sierra Leone is a safe country, contrary to how it’s often portrayed. He also added that Sierra Leoneans are friendly and very accommodating.
4. Ghana – Safest African Countries
Moving to Ghana from abroad has become increasingly popular, especially among Afro-descendants. According to an article written by Whitney Osei, a Ghanaian who decided to relocate back to Ghana after living in the US for 18 years, she considered Ghana an entrepreneur’s paradise:
When I look at Ghana, all I can see is the opportunity for growth. Even through the Dumsor crisis, I still see opportunities to make money and establish something impactful.
Below are reasons Ghana is worth relocating to.
- Ghana ranks 55th overall on the Global Peace Index with a score of 1.938 and is ranked 4th in Sub-Saharan Africa.
- Ghana’s GDP increased by 5.9%, up from 2.8% in 2023, according to a report by the World Bank. The industry sector grew by 8.1%, especially in oil and gas; agriculture grew by 5.1%; and the services sector grew by 4.5%.
- Ghana’s Afro-descendant movement policies, through initiatives like “Beyond the Return,” have significantly encouraged expat life in Ghana.
5. Senegal – Safest African Countries
Senegal is one of the best West African countries to relocate to. Its hospitality is one of the most attractive features for expats. A BBC article highlights Senegal’s culture of hospitality, captured in the local term “Teraanga.”
Below are key indicators that make Senegal a great country to relocate to.
- Senegal has a strong reputation for political stability, with a history of three successful political transitions since its independence.
- Senegal ranks 84th overall on the Global Peace Index and is the 13th safest country in Africa, reinforcing the Senegal safety ranking.
- Senegal has a diverse economy, including agriculture and tourism.
- Senegal had a GDP of $32.3 billion in 2023, with a real GDP growth rate of 6.9%, indicating solid economic expansion and productivity.
6. Gambia
First of all, I laugh at Gambians because their country is basically a river with a country built around it. It’s the smallest country on mainland Africa.
If you want to move in, enter Kololi first. It’s relaxed, social, and has just enough infrastructure to make life comfortable without losing that intimate small community feel. Because Gambia is very close to Senegal, you will see that it is excellent for business and a fun lifestyle.
And the food, mon Dieu! You can literally eat fresh fish every single day, absurdly cheap. If you eat well as a lifestyle priority, Gambia will take care of you.
The Gambia is one of the cheapest and safest African countries to relocate to. It is a small West African nation with a community-oriented lifestyle.
Below are appealing highlights for choosing to live in The Gambia.
- The Gambia is among Africa’s top 15 safest countries, ranking 82nd globally on the Global Peace Index with an overall score of 2.079.
- The Gambia’s overall healthcare system is underdeveloped, according to an article by Britannica; however, compared to some other African countries, it has a low prevalence rate of HIV/AIDS, meaning the national infection rate is relatively low.
- The Gambia is very affordable. According to an article by All Africa, it was listed as one of the eight cheapest African countries for expatriates in 2022.
7. Zambia
Zambia is one of the highly urbanised countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, making it one of the best countries for relocation in Southern Africa. It is also known for its strong expat network, and the indicators below reflect Zambia’s expat safety.
Below are key reasons to consider relocating to Zambia.
- Zambia is a peaceful society, ranking 57th on the Global Peace Index and 5th in Sub-Saharan Africa, with a score of 1.948.
- Zambia stands out for its natural wonders, contributing significantly to tourism and economic growth.
