Beijing, China – The Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA) on September 4, 2024 signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) paving the way for the concession of the railway.
The signing which took place during the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) and was witnessed by the Heads of State of China, Tanzania, and Zambia. The MoU marks a significant step towards revitalizing TAZARA’s infrastructure and rolling stock. Meanwhile, negotiations are underway with China Civil Engineering and Construction Corporation (CCECC) to finalize the concession agreement by year-end.
Under the 30-year concession, CCECC will rehabilitate TAZARA’s infrastructure and rolling stock over two years. The railway’s operational capacity is expected to increase significantly, with annual tonnage projected to grow from 500,000 metric tonnes to 2 million.
This development is seen as a major driver of regional economic growth, aligning with the aspirations of the people of Tanzania and Zambia.
