Love at First Sight: My Unforgettable Journey to Rwanda

As I stepped off the plane in Kigali, Rwanda’s capital city, I felt an instant connection. The warmth of the sun, the vibrant culture, and the resilience of the people captivated me. My journey with RwandAir had set the tone for an extraordinary adventure.

Kigali, a city reborn from the ashes of tragedy, surprised me with its cleanliness, peace, and harmony. The 1994 genocide, which claimed over a million lives, seemed like a distant memory, replaced by a sense of hope and determination.

My first stop was the Kigali Genocide Memorial, a poignant reminder of the country’s turbulent past. The museum’s exhibits, personal accounts, and Wall of Names Memorial left me speechless. I felt the weight of history, the pain of loss, and the power of forgiveness.

Next, I explored the charming Nyamirambo neighborhood, where I discovered the Nyamirambo Women’s Center. This haven of empowerment and education welcomed me with open arms, sharing stories of struggle and triumph. Over lunch, prepared by a local family, I connected with the community, forging unforgettable bonds.

Shopping in Kigali revealed a treasure trove of local craftsmanship at the Union Trade Center and Caplaki Craft Market. Each purchase supported the community, fostering economic growth and cultural preservation.

A scenic road trip to Gisenyi, Rwanda’s beach resort town, unfolded like a canvas of breathtaking vistas. The drive, though slow, allowed me to absorb the majestic mountains, picturesque villages, and obedient drivers (who drove slower than I could walk!).

In Rubavu, I embarked on a local boat tour of Lake Kivu, marveling at the crystal-clear waters. The Healing Hot Springs of Nyamyumba, believed to possess therapeutic properties, beckoned me to relax, rejuvenate, and connect with nature.

Rwanda, a land of contrasts, offers countless experiences: Volcanoes National Park’s gorilla treks, cave explorations, and lake tours. Each destination whispers stories of resilience, hope, and beauty.
