Nigeria’s government has decided to halt the Nigeria Air project, initiated in 2023, following an indefinite suspension by federal authorities.
Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development Festus Keyamo announced the decision, expressing concerns over the agreement with Ethiopian Airlines.
He criticized the proposal, citing potential risks in allowing a foreign entity to control Nigeria’s aviation sector.
The suspended airline’s ownership structure, which granted Ethiopian Airlines a 49% equity stake, sparked significant apprehension among stakeholders.
The House of Representatives intervened in June 2023, urging the Federal Government to freeze Nigeria Air’s operations amidst allegations of fraud.
In response, the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development emphasized that Nigerian carriers must demonstrate enhanced operational capabilities and consistency to secure rights for routes to the US and other international destinations.
Notably, Air Peace and Air Contractors, prominent Nigerian flag carriers, could potentially expand their operations to include US routes if they meet stringent operational standards.
