UN Tourism and its Member States are celebrating the designation of 2027 as the International Year of Sustainable and Resilient Tourism.
At the UN Tourism headquarters in Madrid, leaders welcomed ambassadors from 24 Member States, including Ambassador Farrukh Tursunov of Uzbekistan, who sponsored the resolution adopted by 86 Member States at the UN General Assembly in February.
Also in attendance was Rosario Sánchez Grau, Secretary of State for Tourism of Spain, the host country of UN Tourism.
During the event, UN Tourism Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili expressed gratitude, stating, “The adoption of the Resolution to proclaim 2027 the International Year of Sustainable and Resilient Tourism was a collaborative achievement worth celebrating today.”
He emphasized that this initiative will highlight tourism’s role in driving development and opportunity, emphasizing the importance of sustainable growth and resilience in facing future challenges.
The UN General Assembly Resolution tasks UN Tourism with coordinating and executing the International Year in partnership with governments, relevant UN organizations, international and regional bodies, and other stakeholders.
