Nigeria’s airport terminals have seen a decline in passenger numbers due to rising airfares to local destinations.
The three busiest terminals, Abuja, Lagos, and Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos, have not processed many passengers for travel.
Airlines have been assisting each other in airlifting passengers and splitting trip revenue to prevent growing operating costs. Research shows that aircraft fuel accounts for 45% of operating costs, followed by labour, aircraft rent and ownership, non-aircraft rents and ownership, professional services, landing fees, food and beverage, maintenance materials, and transport-related costs.
The current exchange rate and rise in aviation fuel have led to airlines raising ticket prices, with one-way economy class tickets from Lagos to Abuja and Port Harcourt now costing between N100,000 and N150,000.
