U.S President Joe Biden plans to end the participation of Gabon, Niger, Uganda, and the Central African Republic in the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) trade programme due to “gross violations” of human rights and failure to address US concerns about their non-compliance with the eligibility criteria.
The AGOA, launched in 2000, grants exports from qualifying countries duty-free access to the US market. African governments and industry groups are pushing for an early 10-year extension without changes to reassure businesses and investors.
