Whether it is Santorini, Paris, or Lisbon that you are dreaming of, you need to budget your trip. You want to know the cost to travel from Nigeria to Europe. The first thing I will tell you is that you should get a pen and paper, because the answer to your question is not straightforward. Travel is more than just flight tickets.

The cost of travelling from Nigeria to Europe depends on where you’re going, when you’re booking, how you like to sleep, and, honestly, how patient you were with the visa process.

But that’s exactly why we need to talk about it properly. Because too many people either dramatically overestimate what a Europe trip costs (and never go), or they dramatically underestimate it (book a flight without thinking, then scramble for everything else). You don’t want to be in either situation.

I’ve broken this down into every cost category you need to know, with real figures as of 2026. By the time you finish reading, you’ll have a working budget for your trip. We will do lots of calculating together.

Why Exchange Rates Matter in 2026

Before we get into any numbers, we need to acknowledge the almighty exchange rate.

Naira vs Euro: How to Budget Smartly for Your Europe Trip

As of the time of this writing (April 2026), the naira is trading at roughly ₦1,360 per dollar at the official market. The parallel market sits slightly higher, between ₦1,400 and ₦1,480, depending on who you’re talking to and where.

Put that in mind when you’re trying to budget in naira for a trip that is priced entirely in euros and pounds.

So, to make things easier for both of us, I will be giving you both the current foreign currency figure and the rough Naira equivalent throughout this piece.

Flight Cost from Nigeria to Europe: Lagos/Abuja to London, Paris & Beyond

Whenever you search for the cost of travel from Nigeria to Europe, the first thing you will find is the flight cost. It is the big one everyone asks about first, and it’s also where the range is widest.

Cheapest Flights from Nigeria to Europe: Airlines, Dates & Booking Tips

The average round-trip flight from Lagos to London runs around $1,067. But if you’re flexible and book far enough in advance, you can get $1,197 or less for a round-trip.

At today’s rate, $1,067 is roughly ₦1.45 million.

That sounds like a lot. I will show you some real numbers now.

Flying on a Thursday is generally the cheapest day on the Lagos–London route, and May tends to be the cheapest month. Airlines like Kenya Airways and RwandAir typically offer the most affordable fares, and two-stop itineraries usually cost less than direct flights.

Schengen visa cost for Nigerians travelling to Europe 2026

If you’re going to France specifically, flight tickets from Nigeria to France start from around $378 one-way on Skyscanner.

Round-trip on a budget carrier with a stop in Casablanca or Nairobi can realistically come in around $600–$750, which is roughly ₦816,000–₦1,020,000.

Direct flights with British Airways or Virgin Atlantic to London will cost you more. Direct roundtrip fares with Virgin Atlantic or British Airways tend to range from $1,074 to $1,235.

Direct vs Indirect Flights: What Nigerian Travellers Should Choose

Okay, so real talk. Direct flights from Nigeria to Europe are worth every extra naira if you are thinking about convenience and peace of mind like me. The moment you land at Heathrow or Amsterdam without having touched down somewhere in between, you will feel the difference in your body.

Because the stress of whether your luggage made the transfer, or a delay in the first leg, and all of that is not there. You can do indirect with Ethiopian Airlines via Addis, Turkish via Istanbul, or Emirates via Dubai, but that stopover adds mental load, extra security checks, and risk of missing your connecting flight. I’ve seen people miss their London meetings because Addis was fogged in. I would always avoid that stress ten times out of ten.

That said, the honest caveat is that direct options from Nigeria to Europe are still pretty limited. You’re mostly looking at Lagos to London Heathrow on British Airways or Virgin, or a handful of other routes.

So if your destination isn’t served directly, then choose your connecting hub wisely rather than just cheaply. Istanbul and Addis are genuinely efficient hubs with decent layover experiences.

What I’d warn against is the trap of booking the cheapest routing through some obscure hub with a 45-minute connection window. If you must connect, build in at least a 2-3 hour buffer, travel light, and carry essentials in your cabin bag like your life depends on it.

Ticket typeUSDNaira (Approx.)
Budget (indirect, booked early)$600–$750₦816,000–₦1,020,000
Mid-range (one stop, major carrier)$900–$1,100₦1.2M–₦1.5M
Direct flight (BA, Virgin Atlantic)$1,074–$1,235₦1.46M–₦1.68M

My advice is that you should try to book at least 90 days in advance. Set price alerts on Google Flights and KAYAK. The difference between booking in January and booking in May for a summer trip can be up to two or three hundred dollars. You can save that money for a nice meal when you land.

Visa Cost for Nigerians Travelling to Europe: Schengen & UK Fees 2026

This part is serious, and I need you to pay more attention here. It is not just about the visa now, but everything around it.

Schengen Visa Cost Breakdown: €90 Fee + Hidden VFS Charges

If your Europe trip is to any city in France, Germany, Italy, Spain, or Netherlands, you need the Schengen visa. But you knew that.

The standard Schengen visa fee in 2026 is €90 for adults and €45 for children aged 6–12. Children under 6 is free.

But that €90 is only the beginning.

Most Schengen consulates outsource appointments to VFS Global or TLScontact, and you cannot avoid their own separate service fees.

VFS charges around €38 if you are applying from Nigeria. Then there’s mandatory travel insurance (more on that later).

When you add everything up, including the consulate fee, service centre charges, document preparation costs, and optional services, the real cost of a Schengen visa application typically lands between €150 and €250 per adult.

At ₦1,360 per dollar (and roughly ₦1,467 per euro), €150–€250 works out to about ₦220,000–₦367,000, just for the visa.

UK Visitor Visa Cost for Nigerian Applicants (2026 Update)

What if you are visiting a city in the UK?

The UK is not part of Schengen. That means you’ll need a separate Standard Visitor Visa, which costs £115 (~$145, roughly ₦197,200) plus any service charges through VFS UK.

One more thing you must remember is that visa fees are non-refundable even if your application is rejected. So, whether they reject your application for the visa or not, you’re paying for processing, not approval.

So you will try as much as possible to get your documents right the first time. You must get all your bank statements, cover letter, travel insurance, and hotel booking documents. Do not try to cut corners here.

Processing time: Schengen visa processing in Nigeria can take anywhere from three weeks to 60 days in rare cases. Just make sure to apply early. Seriously.

Travel Insurance Cost for Europe Trips from Nigeria

You cannot skip this one, and honestly, you wouldn’t want to.

Travel medical insurance is compulsory for visitors to Schengen countries.

Mandatory Schengen Insurance

The insurance must cover at least €30,000 and include medical treatment, hospitalisation, and repatriation costs.

A basic travel insurance policy covering a two-week Europe trip typically runs $40–$80 (₦54,400–₦108,800). Some Nigerian insurers offer Schengen-compliant policies. Please check with your bank or insurer before buying foreign ones, as some Schengen missions in Nigeria only accept policies from companies on their approved list.

Daily Living Costs in Europe: Budget Guide for Nigerian Travellers

Wherever you go, you have to sleep and eat. Now, whether you plan to buffet around restaurants and bars, or just enjoy local cuisine, is up to you.

This is where travel style matters most. The cost of living in Europe is not the same. For instance, Paris and Budapest are both in Europe. London and Lisbon are both in Europe. But the difference in what it costs to stay alive in each city per day is enormous.

Accommodation Costs: Hostels, Airbnb & Hotels for Nigeria to Europe Travel

Accommodation takes the largest bite of any travel budget. I always put it at 35–45% of daily spending. Well, depending on where you want to sleep. It doesn’t have to be a 5-star resort. A hostel dorm at $15 per night is cheaper than a hotel at $90 per night. But you know this doesn’t just affect your comfort, but it also reshapes what the entire trip costs.

Let me give you a breakdown from experience.

Break down Costs

If you are going to Poland, you may run $35–$55 per day on a budget. With this, you can get good food, clean hostels, and efficient public transport.

If you are landing in Budapest, you can take selfies in the thermal baths, enjoy the view of the stunning architecture, and the food. With all that spending only around $35–$55 per day.

For big guys, if it is Paris or France generally, you will spend more.

Going to France on a budget means you have to tighten your fist on your money and close your eyes to many attractions to spend only $70–$100 per day. If you will be staying in Paris, you will be spending more oh. Don’t say I didn’t tell you.

If you are going to Germany, you can enjoy your stay for only $60–$90 per day. The UK generally can squeeze out a budget of $80–$120. But don’t go near London if you are not willing to spend triple this amount.

On a backpacker budget of around €105 per day, you’d have to be taking buses, staying in cheap dorms, and doing mostly free activities. If you have a mid-range budget of around €190 per day, you can get a private room in an Airbnb or two-star hotel, eat out for most meals, and do some paid activities like visiting museums.

Food Costs in Europe: How to Eat Well on a Nigerian Budget

If you are on a very tight budget, you can still spend $25–$40 per day eating street food, markets, and supermarkets.

What if you have a mid-range budget? You can enjoy life more in mixing cafes, casual restaurants and the occasional splurge on a budget of $50–$75 per day.

And seriously, for someone with a tight budget, like if you are not sponsored by Uncle Otedola, just buy your food in supermarkets like everyone else. You will find excellent fresh bread, cheese, fruit, and cold cuts. I promise you can eat extremely well for €10–€15 a day if you shop like a local rather than eating every meal at a restaurant.

Transportation Costs Within Europe: Trains, Buses & Budget Airlines

One of the things that catch my people off guard is how much they spend on transportation. Don’t underestimate this transport, especially if you plan to visit more than one city or country.

Getting Around European Cities: Metro, Bus & Walking Tips for Budget Travellers

If you are planning on visiting different cities, book trains. Trains are relatively cheap and easy for travelling in Europe. A budget of €200–€300 can carry you for two weeks travelling intercity if you book rail tickets in advance (You can opt for Eurail passes if you will travel a lot during your stay).

Budget airlines like Ryanair and EasyJet fly between European cities for as little as €20–€60 if you book early.

Within cities, most metro or bus tickets cost €2–€5, and most major cities sell daily unlimited transit passes for around €10. Transportation around most cities is usually only 2–5 EUR for a metro or bus ticket, and daily unlimited passes run around 10 EUR.

Hidden Costs Nigerian Travellers Forget When Budgeting for Europe

Before you run off and then come back to call out Travel Radio, let me tell you some things that I cannot add to this budget. Like some things that regularly catch people who want to travel off guard.

Airport Taxes, Baggage Fees & Tourist Taxes: Small Costs That Add Up

First of all, you know your country. You must sort this, sort that. Normally, travellers are legally obligated to pay airport taxes and departure fees. But Nigeria’s international departure tax is supposed to be built into most tickets. But you might get to the airport on your day, and they still tell you to pay for it. So, try to double-check.

If you are going by budget airlines, you may lso have to pay for checked luggage separately. For example, a bag on Ryanair can add €30–€50 on each way. So, you either include it when booking, or pay before boarding.

Unless you are doing digital fasting, you need data and roaming. So you will have to either buy a local SIM or a European eSIM before you travel. MTN, Airtel or Glo may not work in many European cities, and even where they are working, you will pay through your nose for roaming. A multi-country European eSIM for two weeks typically costs $20–$40.

Many European cities charge a small overnight fee, like €1–€5 per night at your hotel or Airbnb. It’s small but budget for it.

Also, some visa application centres charge a separate appointment booking fee. Read the full fee list on your specific embassy’s page before you show up.

How to Reduce Your Cost to Travel from Nigeria to Europe in 2026

Let me help you with advice from experience, and because you are following Travel Radio. If you use these tips, you may save a lot on many things.

5 Proven Ways to Save Money on Your Nigeria to Europe Trip

  1. Book flights 3–6 months before your travel date. See, I used to think it was a lie, but this I have seen. You can literally save up to 100 USD if you book in advance. Booking at least 90 days in advance gets you the best rates on the Lagos–London route, especially.
  2. Travel in shoulder season. May through June and September through October offer excellent deals before holiday travel begins. This is because there are fewer crowds. Airlines are offering more manageable prices.
  3. Consider Eastern Europe as your base. Prague, Budapest, Warsaw, and Krakow are genuinely beautiful cities that cost a fraction of Paris or London per day. You can base yourself there and take a short budget flight to visit a Paris or London, or whatever Western European city you want for a day or two. But sleeping in Western Europe is a sure way to burn money fast.
  4. Go indirect on your flight. You can book Royal Air Maroc (through Casablanca), Ethiopian Airlines (through Addis Ababa), and RwandAir (through Kigali). These are some of the flights with some of the lowest prices from Lagos to Europe.
  5. Cook some of your meals. Yes, do book accommodation with a kitchen at least some nights. BUT enter markets and supermarkets. These places in Europe stock incredible food. So you eat like half your meals in, cooked by yourself, and half out. This will cut your food budget by 30–40% without sacrificing the experience.

Final Reality Check: Is the Cost to Travel from Nigeria to Europe Worth It?

The numbers above cover transport, accommodation and food. I don’t know what you are going there for, so I can’t cover what you’ll spend on things you plan or didn’t plan. You know, like the unexpected day trip, market stall buying, or drinks with people you just met somewhere.

Therefore, I will advice that you budget a buffer of at least 10–15% on top of your estimate. You never know what might come up. And it is these unplanned experiences that make travel worth it.

Europe is not impossibly expensive for Nigerians. It’s just that it requires planning, patience with the visa process, and being honest with yourself about what a trip actually costs. But it’s doable and once you’ve done it, you’ll wonder why you waited so long.
